El llamado acceso libre (en inglés, Open access) es el acceso libre, inmediato, e irrestricto a material digital educativo y académico, principalmente artículos de investigación científica de revistas especializadas con peer review ('revisión por pares').
Acceso libre (AL) significa que cualquier usuario individual que tenga acceso a la Internet, en cualquier momento pueda conectarse al artículo, leerlo, descargarlo, guardarlo, imprimirlo, usarlo y hacer minería de datos de su contenido digital. Con frecuencia, un artículo AL tiene derechos de autor limitados y regulaciones restringidas. También se extiende a otros contenidos digitales que los autores desean hacer libremente accesible a los usuarios en linea. El acceso libre es una necesidad primariamente hecha evidente con el advenimiento de Internet.
